Hieu started his coaching career while student teaching at Los Amigos High School as the Varsity Boys and Girls coach in the late 90’s when his students dared him to apply for the job. While there, he helped lead them to a Garden Grove League title and several trips to the Division IV CIF playoffs. He has spent the last five years at Beach Cities Volleyball Club serving as an assistant coach for the 12 Smack team and clinician for their Starters program. His 12 Smack teams have consistently finished in the Top 25 in SCVA and in 2020-21, a Top 10 finish in the inaugural Premier Volleyball League season. He’s also won two All-City Long Beach Middle School volleyball championships. Currently, he is a volunteer Varsity Assistant Coach for the C.A.M.S. High School Girls team. By day, he is a middle school teacher in Long Beach and loves working with young kids in the development of not only their athletic skills, but also their ability to think critically. Hieu spends his spare time watching sports, collecting Marvel trading cards, and playing board games with his family.
