Age groups for the 2014 season:

• 10/11’s –Born on or after 9/1/02,
• 12’s – Born on or after 9/1/01,
• 13’s – Born on or after 9/1/00
• 14’s – Born  on or after 9/1/99

                      Surfside Volleyball Club started 12 years ago with one 12-and-under team.  Our teams have always done well and the girls have a lot of fun.  In the last ten years, we have had over 100 former Surfside Girls play on Mira Costa’s volleyball team, along with numerous girls on the teams at Redondo Union, Chadwick, Marymount, Notre Dame, Peninsula, South, El Segundo, Bishop, Harvard-Westlake, Culver City, West and other local schools. Our director, Carolyn Lawson, also ran Manhattan West Volleyball Club from 1984-1993 and has produced many scholarship volleyball players to schools including UCLA, Pepperdine, University of Virginia, University of Hawaii, Texas A & M, Cal State’s Long Beach & Fullerton, NC State, Davidson, Colgate, Harvard, Rutgers, VA Tech, Biola, Cal Lutheran and University of Colorado.

Our dedicated coaches are not only great players with many years of coaching experience, but they relate well and are wonderful mentors to pre-teen and teenage girls.  Our goal is to teach proper volleyball technique, motivate the players to reach peak performance, and have fun while doing it.  Although we believe in middle school aged girls doing multiple sports, if you are on our “1” team in 12’s, 13’s, 14’s, you must put volleyball first if more than one player is missing.  Please let us know when we call you to accept you if you have another commitment, as this will affect which team you are put on.   All players must make all practices unless sick regardless of team.

            This season we are partnering again with Prime Athletes to increase agility, strength, quickness and jumping ability.  We will have a mandatory plyometric and conditioning session in the 30-40 min. preceding most of our regular gym practices starting mid November.   Cost for this program will be $450 for the season, paid separately to Prime Athletes. (Normal cost for Prime Athletes twice a week sessions is $120 per month.)  Mandi Collins, Founder of Prime Athletes, is a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist & former Mira Costa All American, who received a volleyball scholarship to UCLA. 

            Coaches include Erika Stevens, Brooke Donahue, Hayley Lawson, Brooke Phillips, Amy Mosebar, and Amanda Ilgunas.   Mandi Collins is our Strength and Conditioning Coach.   Check our website for coaches’ biographies.

           We have always tried to carry 10-12 players per team because we believe that play time makes the girls improve and have an overall better volleyball experience.  Other clubs have consistently carried 14-15 on a team, leaving many on the bench for whole tournaments.  However, this year the SCVA has mandated a new policy regarding club commitments and deposits taken that will affect our control over the number of girls on each team.  Verbal commitments will be taken in the days following tryouts, but the signed letter of commitment cannot be accepted until Oct. 18 at 4pm along with a $1000 deposit. Surfside assumes that your word is good if you decide to give us a definitive verbal commitment.  

            We expect to start practices once a week the week of October 22^nd.  Starting the week of November 5^th we will either have two practices a week or one team practice and one specialty (hitting, setting, defense, serving, etc) practice.  Starting after Thanksgiving, practices will be twice per week.  We will not practice the week of December 24^th, and will resume practices starting January 2^nd.  Some other weeks with school holidays may only have one practice per week.  Gyms for practice include MBMS, Dana Middle, Del Aire, Betty Ainsworth, Adams Middle, & Universal Sports Center in El Segundo.  Days may vary.  Tournaments are 6-8 hours twice a month on either a Saturday or a Sunday starting in January.   Check www.scvavolleyball.org, click on juniors, then girls, then schedule to see schedule. (13’s play in 14’s., 11’s in 12’s.)  All 13’s, 14’s and top 12’s teams will do SoCal JO qualifier.  Due to overwhelming parent response, only those teams qualifying to go to the Junior Olympics will have a post season tournament the end of June.

Costs for 2013 season:

12-Extreme, 12-Gold, 12-Platinum: $3000 (assuming they are not participating in the SoCal JO Qualifier)

12-1, 13-1, 13/14: $3200 – includes 3-day JO Qualifier in Anaheim 

15-1: $3200 + cost of traveling JO Qualifier (Cost TBD based on location and number of girls on the team) and travel related costs for So Cal JO Qualifier held in Las Vegas

Prices do not include uniform and PrimeAthletes fee paid directly to Prime Athletes ($450).   Returning players can use the same uniform. Uniform cost is approximately $190 for 2 jerseys, one pair sox, one sweatshirt, one duffle bag, and one volleyball bike short.  The rest is optional.   Sweatpants are $52 & nylon jacket with name is $62.  Uniform sizing will be done starting Oct 18^th accompanied by uniform payment.  Season fees will be paid in $1000 increments on Oct 18^th, Dec. 1^st and Jan. 2^nd ($1200 on Jan 2^nd for teams playing in JO Qualifier).  Surfside does not do traveling Jr. National qualifying tournaments for 14’s and younger, only the So Cal Jr. National qualifier.   That is an unnecessary expense for any 14U teams.   High school players do need to do these tournaments to get seen by college scouts.

Regarding any teams qualifying for Junior National Tournament:  Fees for that tournament are approximately $600 extra, but does not include room, food or transportation.  14’s and under will stay in rooms with their parents, or if a parent cannot go, can make arrangements with another parent to keep their daughter. 15’s will stay in rooms with other teammates arranged by their coach.

I just wanted to tell you that I am so impressed with Hayley as a coach.  She is so involved in the game and constantly teaching the girls.  I really enjoyed watching her this weekend during the tournament.  They all look over at her if they lose a point and somehow her face never shows frustration or disappointment, just a look of, “hey, we have a level of expectation, and you’ll get there.”  And then she gives them advice how to do so, without making them feel bad.  They must love her at Mira Costa.  

Thank you for preparing *** for tryouts.  The information and guidance was extremely helpful.  *** made the Frosh/soph team.  She is excited to play at Costa.

Thank you so much for all your advice, training, and help!! You have made our entire volleyball experience such an enjoyable one.  To have you and your daughters helping us just adds to the positive feeling we get with the sport.  We can’t thank you enough!! You are such a blessing!!!

I was at the clinic for the last 45 minutes.  It looked great.  The two coaches were wonderful (of course you know that), the girls were focused, and they were given the feedback/coaching they desperately needed.

Carolyn and Hayley, Thanks for all your help and advice the last few weeks.  **** is thrilled and looking forward to helping the Costa team.  Not a bad day for Surfside girls!!

You have a rare, most wonderful, unique club that does not need to change in any way! Your family-style club has brought the love of volleyball in my daughter and family.  We have been with you for two years and my daughter has played for middle school.  She knows the difference that your club provides.  She says it’s either Surfside or Nothing!  

I feel my girls and I are incredibly fortunate to be a part of Surfside. Carolyn’s concept of developing the girls, having female coaches, and providing an encouraging environment for each girl have resulted in a great deal of success for my daughters, both on and off the court. Perhaps what I appreciate most is knowing that for the past two years, Anna, Kristin, Mandi and Carolyn, have always kept in mind the individual needs of my daughters, and as such, have facilitated their love of the game and have motivated them to reach their goals. I’m convinced that we couldn’t have received stronger support or guidance from any other club. With all of that in mind, consistent workout locations and times become secondary.

As “my daughter” has said, “Coach” is the best coach she has ever had. I can’t put into words what a special experience this season has been for her, and what an amazing role model “Coach” has been for her. I know “coach” will be in “ “ life forever, probably because “ “ won’t let her get away. My impression is that everyone felt a special connection with “Coach”, and there was never any question of her fairness, commitment or passion for what she does. That, in and of itself, is an exceptional accomplishment. In addition to that, what also sets “coach” apart is that as nice and fun as “coach” is, she knows when to get tough, and the girls respect her for that and work their hardest for her. What a gift she has. I truly wish every teenage girl could have “Coach” as a coach.

“Coach” is the dream coach for a young teen girl. She is kind, funny, warm, and connects with each girl. “S” truly adores her … our household joke is that we call “Coach” her big sister. That kind of sums up what I think “Coach” was for the girls on our team. She really became a big sister role model for them. She was always encouraging, but also knew when to give them tough love on the court if they weren’t performing. I’m sure you know that “Coach” spent the whole day a few weeks ago at Knott’s Berry Farm with her team. Now how many coaches would take their Sunday and spend it riding roller coasters with 9 giddy girls?!

We are really sorry to see the season end. I looked around after the last match in Minneapolis and got all teary, realizing that it was over. “ ” has been really lucky and has had no negative club experiences, but for her, this was the favorite team she has played on. There was no drama, no friction, just happy girls playing volleyball. There were times when they played brilliantly, and times when they kind of sucked, but they always seemed to stick together and encourage each other, and “Coach” was an amazing leader throughout.

“ ‘s” experience this season it was all positive. “Blank” is an excellent coach, very fair and even tempered. We had a wonderful time in Minnesota.

I think the club is run well. You are well organized, communicate clearly to everyone, and you appear to really care about the teams and the players.

“Coach” did an absolutely great job with these girls too! She was that wonderful combination of a skilled instructor, motivator and role-model. I am so glad that “my daughter” had the opportunity to play for her.

You and your club gave “my daughter” a terrific opportunity to increase her skills, meet new friends and continue with her love of VB. For that I want to thank you again!

I just wanted to thank you and Erika and Mandi for the wonderful coaching she received from you over the past three years. As you may know she made the volleyball team at Costa and we are just THRILLED. SHE is thrilled and we just wanted to say thanks because we know that your patience and dedication is, in no small way, much of the reason for her success.

Just a quick note to let you know how much “ “(and parents!) are enjoying our time with Surfside. “Coach” has been such a great mentor and friend to the girls. They all really look up to her and she knows how to inspire each one of them to do their best. “ “ looks forward to each practice and would play volleyball for “Coach” every day if she could.

You have a great group of coaches (which I’m sure you already know). “Coach” was so great with “ “ last year and Mandi, too, has been so encouraging with her. With Mira Costa try-outs coming up (and all the anxiety that comes along with that), it’s made me look back at how far “ “ has come from when she first tried out for the Surfside 12′s team. Her growth as a volleyball player, and more importantly, the confidence she has built that has carried over into other areas of her life, has been due in large part to the influence of her coaches at Surfside. Their impact on her has been tremendous and I look at “ “ now, ready to start high school, and am so thankful for all of the things that volleyball has given her. Whatever happens at MC, I know she’ll continue playing club and being a part of volleyball; and the work ethic, dedication, and camaraderie she has learned from volleyball will stay with her for the rest of her life.

So, thank you for putting together such a great club, for raising amazing daughters, and for giving our family the opportunity to be a part of it!

We just want to let you know what a great season “ our daughter” is having with “coach”. “ “ has really been able to grow as a player and a leader. We have seen such a change in her self-confidence as well as in her game. We see how “coach’s” coaching and encouragement has helped all of the girls. They have really come together as a team.

Surfside has a very positive coaching style. The various coaches were all friendly and positive. I have heard horror stories about coaches from other clubs being rude, verbally abusive and very strict. I am so happy my daughter never had that experience.

I think the preparation for the high school tryouts was OUTSTANDING! It started with Carolyn’s lengthy email about what they look at, how to act, etc. and up to the mock tryout. Plus so many of your coaches have played for Costa-everyone was a huge wealth of knowledge. You did such an excellent job – my daughter actually thought the try outs were easy!! Great preparation!

In regards to our clinics:

I had my daughter go to your Surfside training last night with her friend. She really enjoyed it, learned a lot and thought the coach was wonderful. “ “ did her first year of club at “Blank” this year. She felt she learned more last night doing drills, than she had all year. That was exciting. So thanks for taking her.
